Rehabilitation Program

Rehabilitation is a 24-hour commitment to each patient. All team members work together to improve the patient’s social, cognitive and functional skills as well as adjustment to illness or injury. Patients participate in at least three hours of therapy, Monday through Friday, and a less intensive therapy on the weekends. Therapy may include physical therapy, occupational therapy and speech therapy. Nursing helps the patients practice the skills learned during therapy throughout the rest of the day. Patients practice home and community skills such as cooking, shopping, banking and ordering meals in restaurants. They also practice community mobility including car transfers and negotiating architectural barriers like curbs. Psychological testing, counseling, education and support groups may also be a part of the treatment plan.

The most important members of the team are the patient and his or her family and friends. The family plays a very important part in the rehabilitation process by assisting the individual in learning techniques to enable the rehabilitation process to continue after discharge. In most cases, strong family involvement and clear communication lead to greater success for the patient.

Team communication is an important part of St. John’s Inpatient Rehabilitation program. Patients meet with individual members of the team during their first week on the unit to help determine their needs and the extent of recovery expected. The team continues to meet frequently during the patient’s stay to review his or her progress.
