Dragnostic X-rays

A Positron Emission Tomography (PET) scan is generally used in combination with an MRI or CT scan. It uses tracer material that sends a signal out in areas of your body that may be abnormal.

There are two stages of the PET/CT exam:

  1. You will receive an injection of the radiopharmaceutical FDG (Flourine-18), after which you must wait for 30-60 minutes for your body to metabolize. You will be resting comfortably during this time.
  2. You will be escorted to the PET scanning facility. You will be asked to lie down on a table that passes slowly through the PET scanner. The scanner resembles a CT scanner. You should expect the scan to last approximately 1 hour.

What to expect after your procedure:
You may resume your normal diet immediately following the procedure. You should drink additional fluids for several hours after the scan. There are no physical restrictions after the procedure.
