Gary Rowe resigns as St. John’s Regional Medical Center President and Chief Executive Officer

November 29, 2005

(Joplin, MO) – Gary Rowe announced today that he will resign as president and chief executive officer of St. John’s Regional Medical Center effective February 1, 2006. Rowe stated he felt the time was right for a change. While he contemplated making a career change, he realized it would be best for the Medical Center and the Joplin community to focus his attention full-time to searching for a new position.  “A CEO’s time must be focused exclusively on the future of the organization and its mission to the community,” said Rowe.

“We respect Gary’s decision and appreciate his dedication to the hospital and community,” said Bennie Crossland, St. John’s board chair.  Crossland adds, “Gary has led St. John's Regional Medical Center and St. John’s Medical Group for seven years through a period of significant strategic change, and some of the most dynamic times for the health care industry in this country.  Our medical center and our local health care system today is a leader in serving the health needs of people in this region.  St. John’s has also been recognized for outstanding quality of care by being designated among the

Top 100 Hospitals in heart surgery and among the top 10% of American hospitals in patient safety.  We thank Gary for his role in making St. John’s the one you think of when it matters most.  The Board of Directors and Catholic Health Initiatives will immediately begin the process of developing a transition plan that ensures continuity and continuation of St. John’s mission.  We wish Gary success in his future endeavors.”

Rowe was appointed president and chief executive officer of St. John’s in November of 1998.  “I am proud of the accomplishments made during my time at St. John’s,” Rowe stated. “We have grown to a state-of-the-art regional tertiary medical center. I want to thank the medical staff and hospital employees for their support and dedication; and I know St. John’s Regional Medical Center will continue to provide excellent medical and surgical care to the residents of this region.”
