St. John’s Physician appointed University Clinical assistant professor

St. John's Regional Medical Center in Joplin, MO is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. D. Mitchell Stinnett, Chief Medical Officer of St. John’s Medical Group, as Clinical Assistant Professor at the School of Medicine University of Missouri-Columbia. Dr. Stinnett’s appointment is in the Department of Family and Community Medicine with the university, and he will coordinate clinical education for medical students who do rotations at St. John’s and in our region.

“I believe this will enhance the relationship between the southwest Missouri medical community and the University of Missouri School of Medicine. This program will help our efforts to identify physicians in training with ties to southwest Missouri, who may be interested in returning here to practice. Our goal is to encourage high quality healthcare providers to return to practice in our community,” says Dr. Stinnett.

“I am pleased to welcome you to our faculty. I feel confident that our affiliation will benefit us both,” says Harold A. Williamson, Jr., MD, MSPH, Professor and Chair, Department of Family and Community Medicine, School of Medicine University of Missouri-Columbia.

D. Mitchell Stinnett MD, FACS, FACC, FACCP attended the University of Missouri-Columbia undergraduate school from 1964 to1967. He attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston, TX and graduated Doctor of Medicine with honors in 1971. He completed his general & vascular surgery residency at Baylor affiliated hospitals in 1978. From 1973-1975, Stinnett served as a flight surgeon in Southeast Asia with the United States Air Force. Stinnett also completed a residency in Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery at the Texas Heart Institute in 1980. He came to St. John’s in 1981 to start the open-heart surgery program. Since 2002, he has served as Chief Medical Officer of St. John’s Medical Group.
