Bariatric Surgery Facts

The number of Americans having bariatric, or weight-loss, surgery has been increasing steadily in recent years. For those who are severely obese, having surgery can be more effective in achieving weight loss and improving health than other strategies.

Bariatric surgery is only for people with a serious weight problem. In general, this includes men who are about 100 pounds overweight or more and women who are about 80 pounds overweight or more. You also may consider this procedure if you have obesity-related health problems, such as heart disease or type 2 diabetes.

Surgery is not a quick fix. After surgery, patients need to practice healthy habits, such as eating healthy.

If you’re interested in bariatric surgery, ask your doctor about its risks and benefits.
