Hospice is a special kind of care for the terminally ill and their families. The hospice experience brings death out into the open and makes sickness and loss a time for sharing and remembrance. Those who do choose hospice are rewarded with an experience never to be forgotten. Hospice is filled with the special tenderness of caring for a loved one and the joyful richness of rekindled memories.
Dame Cicely Saunders, founder of modern day hospice care, summed up the hospice philosophy best: "You matter to the last moment of your life, and we will do all we can, not only to help you die peacefully, but to LIVE until you die."
Through the centuries hospice has been defined as "a place of rest for travelers". In more recent years, it has described programs that provide medical and nursing care, as well as emotional and spiritual support, for people who are terminally ill and their families.
In the sense that life is a journey, the traditional meaning is still intact: The hospice of today is an organized program dedicated to meeting the complex needs of the dying and their families.
