St. John's HealthMinute

4/3/2006

Attention parents! If you take your kids out to eat four or more times a week, you may be putting them at risk for heart disease and stroke later in life. Doctors say children who frequently dine out get more starch, sugar, salt, and fat than those who eat at home. They are also more likely to have low insulin sensitivity, an early sign of diabetes. However, eating out two or three times a week doesn’t appear to have heart-harmful effects. So the message for parents…. make healthy choices when you eat out. Most restaurants, even those that serve fast food, now have salads and other low-fat, low-sugar choices.

While we’re on the subject of health and better nutrition, you’ll want to mark this on your calendar. St. John’s will be hosting a free talk on EYE HEALTH & NUTRITION this Thursday, April 6th. Dr. Ernest Bhend will be speaking starting at 6:30 pm. For more info, call St. John’s Referral One at 625-2000.
