Make A Difference…VOLUNTEER

Volunteers make a difference by helping others. They add to the quality of healthcare by assisting the patients, their families, the staff and visitors at the hospital. As a volunteer you can experience the genuine satisfaction of helping others, make new friends who will touch your life in very special ways, develop new interest and possibly learn new skills.
Your help is needed, your comfort and words of reassurance, a smile or helping hand that you can offer to a patient or visitor will never be replaced by scientific equipment or medical breakthroughs. There are many volunteer opportunities within the hospital.

Auxiliary:
The Auxiliary is composed of men and women who daily staff the information desk, gift shop, and Tele-Care phones. Auxiliary members also serve as patient escorts, sort and deliver patient mail, serve coffee to visitors, deliver flowers to patients, assist with blood drives, hold fundraisers, and provide numerous other services to the hospital. St. John’s has ten established workstations that the Auxiliary staffs on a daily basis, as well as a special projects committee.

Teen Volunteers:
The Teen Volunteers ages 13 to 19 assist on the patient floors and in some of the many departments of the medical center. They assist personnel at nurses' stations, run errands for both staff members and patients, and perform a variety of other duties.

General Volunteers:
General Volunteers perform a variety of helpful tasks throughout the medical center. Accounting, Public Relations, Human Resources, Medical Records and the Rehabilitation Center are some of the areas that utilize General Volunteers. Some of the duties they perform include alphabetizing and filing materials, stuffing envelopes, collating papers, assembling manuals, preparing packets, answering telephones and running errands.

Mended Hearts Volunteers:
People who have experienced heart problems can offer assistance to the medical center through the Mended Hearts, Inc.  Mended Hearts Accredited Visitors have received special training and strive to help answer troubling questions and offer moral support to patients and their families before and after heart disease treatment.

Prestige Volunteer:
Volunteers are also utilized by St. John’s Prestige, a program designed to help individuals make the most of their later years. Prestige offers programs and services to help those age 50 and older stay healthy; physically, emotionally and financially. Some of the many activities volunteers are involved in include taking reservations, clerical duties, selling tickets and various other miscellaneous duties.

*To become a Prestige Volunteer, you must be an active member of Prestige and be at least 50 years of age or older. For more information, call 417-625-2262.

Angels in Waiting:
Our Angels work in the Emergency Department waiting area. They offer assistance to family members with information, coffee and are the liaison between the hospital personnel and the family.

Pet Therapy:
Volunteers visit patients at our Rehabilitation Center with their pets. The volunteer is required to be 18 years of age or older and the dog must be canine compliant. This is our newest volunteer group at St. John’s.

Hospice Volunteer:
Volunteers are also an integral part of St. John’s Hospice program. Designed to meet the needs of terminally ill patients and their families. Hospice seeks to provide for the social, emotional, and spiritual, as well as the medical needs of patients. Trained volunteers serve as a “Friend of the Family” and may assist in any number of ways. Providing transportation, running errands, visiting, and light housekeeping are only a few of the tasks that Hospice volunteers might perform. Sixteen hours of training in grief issues, death, dying and bereavement are provided to the volunteer. In addition, many support volunteers working in clerical areas of the department and others assist with Hospice fund-raising efforts.

Volunteers are trusted to be Professional in their actions. Information concerning patients is confidential. It is the obligation of every member of the medical center to respect that privacy. Volunteers are expected to treat all medical center confidences in the same manner.
